Bringing Health & Hope to Port Harcourt Communities

Back to all stories

Last month, the WECare Humanitarian Foundation team set out on a mission that sits at the very heart of our calling: to bring practical, life-changing support to families who are too often forgotten. We visited three underserved communities across Rivers State, offering free medical checkups, hygiene kits, and much-needed encouragement.

The journey was long, and the roads were challenging. But the moment our mobile clinic arrived and the first families began to gather, the exhaustion faded. What we witnessed over those few days was nothing short of inspiring.

The Reality on the Ground

In many of the communities we visited, access to basic healthcare is a luxury. When a child falls sick, mothers often have to choose between buying food and buying medicine. Preventative care, such as regular checkups or blood pressure monitoring, is rarely an option.

We set up our free medical camp under the shade of large trees, using the space as our waiting room, consultation area, and pharmacy. Over the course of three days, our medical volunteers attended to over 250 individuals.

From treating severe malaria in young children to providing eye examinations for the elderly, our team worked tirelessly. But we didn't just treat symptoms—we distributed hygiene kits containing soap, clean towels, and basic first-aid supplies to every family, equipping them with tools to stay healthy long after our trucks had left.

"I walked for two hours to get here because I heard doctors were coming. Today, my baby finally received the medication she needed."

Beyond the Medicine: The Power of Encouragement

While the doctors and nurses were busy, other volunteers spent time simply talking and praying with the community members. We listened to their stories. We heard the concerns of parents worried about school fees, and the struggles of widows trying to keep their families afloat.

Sometimes, we forget that healing is not just physical. A kind word, a listening ear, and a hug can provide just as much relief as a prescription. Seeing the smiles on the faces of the grandmothers and mothers reminded us why we do this work.

What Comes Next?

This outreach was just the beginning. WECare is committed to long-term impact, not just quick visits. We are currently reviewing the data we collected to plan our next steps, which will include:

  • Scheduling follow-up visits for patients requiring ongoing care.
  • Partnering with local health workers to provide continuous support.
  • Hosting a targeted health education workshop for the mothers in the community.

We want to say a massive thank you to our incredible volunteers, our donors, and everyone who makes this work possible. You are putting Love in Action.
